  1. In my not so humble opinion, the best money spent out of the box right now, would be a Ruger.
  2. Bart, all the recently built 1911s I have handled has some sharp edges, unless it is sold with the "melted" look. My custom built on a Wilson frame and slide has very sharp edges. Very crisply finished, like a 1911 should be. Its not a problem for me. I'll occasionally pinch my hand switching magazines. That model Colt is one of my favorites and I have handled many of them. I would gladly shoot one, anytime and you don't have to worry about sharp edges.
  3. Bart Solo, it is perfectly legal for the Modern category. May need a trigger job but should work great.
  4. Crazy Mingo, While there is no "list" of guns to choose from, there is a Shooter's Handbook with all the legal specifications for a Traditional legal gun and most everything that isn't legal. If the Springfield 1911 A-1 is factory, it should be fine for traditional. If it has been modified, it may or may not be.
  5. If I remember correctly, the stage times were posted on the bulletin board as I remember looking at them and not thinking I did that well. They were not posted on line for several days, though.
  6. Ah Branchwater, I believe Pit Viper aka Ken Nelson is still supporting it and offering it free to anyone who wants it. I will touch bases with him and see.
  7. Mic McPhearson, a good friend of mine, who has forgot more about ballistics than most people will ever know, told me that small primer .45 ACP can be more consistent than large primers. In our game, I do not think it would make a difference.
  8. Glenn Fryxell is a personal friend of mine. When he speaks cast lead alloy bullets, I listen! Most of his talk is too technical for me, though....
  9. Well, different hardness and different alloys for different purposes. At the velocities we shoot, a softer alloy with more lead content works good. Fit and lube are also very important. If a bullet is too hard and driven at slow speeds, it may not bump up, seal the bore and could lead the barrel. Especially if it is on the small side for the bore. A too soft bullet that is driven too fast can also lead the bore. I have shot pure lead bullets at nearly 2000 fps in rifles with no gas checks. Can be done with paper patches. I have also had extremely hard bullets that leaded terribly due to poor lube and poor fit. When I was casting bullets for the cowboy crowd, I strove for a Brinnell hardness of 11-12. No one ever had a problem with leading that ever told me.
  10. R1 = yes R1 Stainless = yes R1 Enhanced = no R1 Enhanced Stainless = no R1 Carry = yes for Modern with proper magazines The Enhanced could be used in Modern with a front sight change and proper magazines.
  11. Goody, I have that gun but with fixed sights and I don't see why it wouldn't be legal. I meets the weight requirements and mine out shoots me..... I don't personally see the extra slide cuts any worse than a gun with a light rail. Just my opinion. BD
  12. And typically, with the softer alloy bullets used in Wild Bunch, the bullet flattens out against the target and falls to the ground without shattering like a harder bullet would.
  13. For me, shooting a model 12 over a 97 was several things. First, I could pick them up a lot cheaper than a 97. Second, they were much smoother and less worn out than the 97s I was finding. Third, they seemed to more reliable and ran faster. To each their own! BD
  14. Maybe in their holsters or where SASSers stage their revolvers? PapaGrande, at the end of shooting a pistol string with the 1911 in Wild Bunch, it is not reholstered until it is cleared by the RO at the end of the stage. A lot of cowboy stages don't have a place to restage the pistol. In Cowboy, all revolvers go back to leather, unless otherwise specifically specified in the stage description. I don't want you to feel beat up over here like you do on the SASS wire as we want to be friendly and grow the sport of WBAS so please take our answers here not as being hateful but sometimes they may sound like that due to not being able to get the tone of the statement by reading it. Also, to answer your other post about SASS ROs should be able to learn how to handle WBAS guns, sure, they should be able to. However, in the middle of a match is not the time to have to learn that. The 1911 and the Model 12 range operations are so different than an open an empty double barrelled shotgun or a reholstered single action revolver, that it would be difficult and quite possibly dangerous to try and figure it out in the middle of a stage. By the way, where are you located? Knowing that info, maybe we could help point you in the direction of some close by people and matches that would be helpful to you. Best, BD
  15. Also, a lot of cowboy stages aren't written with a safe place to stage a 1911 when the shooter is finished with it or it becomes unusable in a stage.
  16. And one big one that makes a huge difference is that most ROs in a cowboy match aren't familiar with the rules of clearing the 1911.
  17. Maybe Happy Jack can expand on it but the way I see it, D. All of the above. However, after a first Spirit of the Game and a talking to by Posse Marshal/Match Director, a shooter probably won't get a second one. I would think they would act better or not be there.
  18. Have no connection with or have used their products, but this looks pretty good. https://www.pbrammo.com/catalog/perfect-cowboy-ammunition%E2%84%A2/deputy-line/45-acp-wildbunch I use 230 grain and it has absolutely nothing to do with easier to make power factor. You can make power at a lower velocity with a softer recoil impulse. Faster followup shots and less movement off target. Learned that from J. F. Norfleet.
  19. I empty my mags at the end of every shoot, not because I'm worried about the springs, though. I am more worried about dust and dirt getting in the mags. Every once in a while, I will actually pull the mags apart and clean them.
  20. I only use Colt 7 round magazines. They work the best. Worked good enough to win Winter Range.
  21. While Two Dot is correct, I can almost assure you, no one in the top 10 at Winter Range or EOT were shooting Rossi rifles.
  22. El Mulo Vaquero, I, personally, deeply regret not making it up to shoot with you all, as the ambassador for this region. I will see if I can do that soon! Boggus
  23. 5 rounds, 7 rounds, costuming. it doesn't really matter. As Evil Roy said, people who make excuses to not shoot are going to make excuses no matter. Our problem is exposure. The reason we don't draw new shooters is no one knows we are here. I shoot a lot of other sports and as soon as I mention shooting CAS or Wild Bunch, the first question I get asked is "How does blanks bust those balloons?" They know nothing about CAS or Wild Bunch. All they have ever seen is Mounted Shooting. Whether is been on tv, in the gun magazines or wherever, they haven't seen our sports. Just Mounted. Shooting. I can't wait to get my hands on Dusty Boddam's article in WSJ. I would like to see if I could get several copies of the article just to spread around at stores, shoots and anywhere else I can.
