Nawlins Kid Posted June 6, 2021 Posted June 6, 2021 A little survey on which type ( flat or ached) of mainspring housing that is on your WB 1911 's and your reason for your choice? Nawlins Quote
Doc Holloman Posted June 6, 2021 Posted June 6, 2021 Flat. I have short fingers so anything that makes the grip smaller. Quote
Happy Jack Posted June 6, 2021 Posted June 6, 2021 I shoot both. Most of mine are flat but if I were to change anything I would put arched ones on some of my pistols. They just feel better to me. But not enough better to spend the money to replace a bunch. Quote
Nawlins Kid Posted June 6, 2021 Author Posted June 6, 2021 I have read that for shooting one hand ( traditional ) the 1911 should have a flat MSH. Nawlins Quote
Baltimoreed11754 Posted June 6, 2021 Posted June 6, 2021 I’ve always shot mine with flat hsgs but after buying an older Thompson AO 1911 with an arched hsg I liked it so now my main match 1911s have arched ones. I also use long or mid length triggers in my 1911s. At 6’4 I have large hands with long fingers. To the op, you might want to also ask about trigger length in your survey as they also play a part in how well or poorly you can operate your 1911. Quote

Also how about large or small hands. I'm think this could be good information for new shooters. Nawlins Quote
Garrison Joe Posted June 7, 2021 Posted June 7, 2021 Medium size hands. Shoot Traditional. For me, the flat mainspring housing brings sights up on target from draw. An arched housing puts front sight too high. And a medium length trigger puts my trigger finger pad properly on the trigger face without reaching for it. good luck, GJ Quote
VICIOUS Posted June 7, 2021 Posted June 7, 2021 Arched, for the same reason GJ is not using them. I rush the shot and place the front sight low in the rear sight. Need all the help to not shoot under the target. Quote
Tully Mars Posted June 7, 2021 Posted June 7, 2021 Wedged, just suites me and my hand better. Provides a great grip, sucks it right into my palm. Tully Quote
Artemus Posted June 7, 2021 Posted June 7, 2021 Shooting Traditional, I just changed mine out to an arched with a short trigger. I love it. My brother got a CMP 1911 and this is the setup they came with, I did not know I wanted this setup until I tried it. If you're shooting Traditional, this is how the Army trained and issued pistols. marshal stone Posted June 7, 2021 Posted June 7, 2021 I like the wedge. Pushes my hand up to better defeat the grip safety with thumb on the slide safety. Also use thin grips and short trigger. Marshal Stone Quote
Last Chance Posted June 7, 2021 Posted June 7, 2021 MED grips, flat mh, flat MED length trigger Quote
Abilene Posted June 15, 2021 Posted June 15, 2021 Flat. I have small hands. I've never shot anything but flat, which points properly. So if it ain't broke... ...and I think flat looks better. :) Quote
JJ Posted June 16, 2021 Posted June 16, 2021 I read this thread with interest. I had never thought of changing out the mainspring housing with anything different than what can on my Remington R1. It came with flat straight grooved housing. After reading some of the thoughts of others I ordered a serrated straight housing to try that out. With the Cool Hand G10 grips that I now use and the new serrated housing, this combination seems to hold my average hand size quite well once I hand is wrapped around the handle of the 1911. I tried a few rounds yesterday and I liked the feeling of the new combination. Thanks for all of your comments, they are quite helpful. Quote
Nawlins Kid Posted June 17, 2021 Author Posted June 17, 2021 JJ, I'm glad that this post is helping you and hopefully others. Nawlins Quote
Frederick Jackson Turner Posted June 23, 2021 Posted June 23, 2021 I really need to run some speed vs. accuracy tests to see if there is any advantage to one over the other. But, for now, flat, with a long trigger. Cheers! FJT Quote
