Boggus Deal
Can anyone tell me why these three guide rods are illegal?
lostvaquero
I will take a guess but no firearms expert. They look like there are dampers incorporated into the guide rods.

Two Dot
Third is maybe tungsten?
Boggus Deal
We have a winner! I did not realize just how heavy these were until I found one in a gun...
KingSnake
We have a winner! I did not realize just how heavy these were until I found one in a gun... Tungsten weighs about twice as much as same size in steel. PITA to machine too.

Happy Jack
The others can sometimes be hard to spot, but the tungsten one is so heavy that it can push a pistol over weight. If the pistol is close to overweight a magnet will spot the tungsten rod vs. the steel one instantly. I carry a small magnet in my guncart. Boomstick Bruce
Can anyone tell me why these three guide rods are illegal? does the one in the middle and the one on the right go all the way through the plug? im not seeing how they work... Garrison Joe
Yes, solid full length guide rods have to stick through a hole in the replacement cap that comes with it (otherwise, the slide would not have room to open backwards toward the grip frame). Here's a snapshot from muzzle showing tip of rod inside of the cap. You can see a video showing installation and operation at: Courtesy of Brownell's Tech Department. Garrison Joe
And here's why it is easy to spot a full length guide rod without making the shooter disassemble the gun:
J. Frank Norfleet
Just because it is a full length guid rod doesn't mean it is illegal. Full length guide rods are legal in Modern but not in Traditional. Tungsten and recoil reducing guide rods are illegal in both. JFN

The short one doesn’t extend through the spring plug. It’s spring loaded which makes it illegal. The middle one is full length and difficult to detect without disassembling the gun. Legendary Lawman
Great post Boggus. Learned something new. I see that Two Dot is right on the ball.
OzarkShark
Had a cowboy with a "new to him" 1911 that failed the weight check. We found a tungsten guide rod in it when he disassembled it. It was news to him.
