  1. You’ve got some good advice here and some poor advice. I’m going to against the grain with a couple things, though. You’ll hear people say “front sight”! Forget it! Your mind should know now how to line up the sights on target. MUCH more important is proper trigger manipulation. You can spend all day lining up the sights perfectly but when you jerk the trigger all that is moot. Dry fire practice and slow fire target practice will help. But everyone flinches to some degree at some point. Controlling it is the key. That’s the only place dummy rounds are handy loaded in the mag. It will show you your flinch.
Also, forget “muscle memory”. It’s a fallacy. Your brain tells every muscle what to do, when to do it and how much to do it.
Don’t pay attention to where the empty mag falls. Too many people waste too much time making sure they land on the table or carpet. All you want is it out of the gun.
As for malfunctions, properly tuned guns with quality ammo and proper mags mitigate malfunctions to practically nil.
Also, no need to go to the line with a “Barney” mag. That will be the mag you grab when you need a full mag.

  4. Folks, just like on the SASS Wire, there are scammers here, too. One reached out to Dusty Boddams about a deal he and I made 3-4 years ago. His info is going to the police and banks. He sent me his routing number and bank account.

  5. One of the most revered gun hacks, I mean gunsmiths, on the SASS wire hade cut a dove tail in this ‘73 barrel that the sight would not stay in. They had peened it and lock tighted it. Still it wouldn’t stay. I made an oversized sight with a bigger bead that has been working great for a couple years now.

  6. J.J. That bead is 14 carat gold. And while I’ve put on hundreds of sights like you posted, from several makers, I’ve found the three dot setup to be less than ideal for wild bunch. Too busy. To each their own, though.
Without seeing your slide, yes, I would guess both front and rear dovetails would have to be milled.

Okay, a word of warning. Rock Island's front sight slot is slightly bigger than most. We have been trying to get one fitted on a customer's gun and most standard front sights will not anchor securely without serious peening! Great guns, but this has turned out to be a royal pain to deal with.

I have 3 different widths of tenons but a dovetail is typically way better. It gives you a lot more options and stays in place.

Being still very new to SASS I don't have any real hardline stances. Is it fun to hear the steel ring? You bet! does it suck to miss? Of course.

I don't really get a say in how the range is set up so I shoot what is before me.

I have been shooting steel for about a decade on my private property. I only buy/use AR500 steel so there is no denting and the targets remain smooth and flat and I maintain at least 10 yards of distance because that was what I had read was the safe minimum. I have never had a single issue.

Now that I have been shooting matches at a couple of clubs, I have gotten whacked a few times with lead shot and bullet fragments when I am spotting. Take that for what it's worth.

There is a reason the target manufactures say 10 yards…

The real question is at what rifle and pistol distances, with appropriate targets, would people NOT return to shoot a match?  I have witnessed people not returning to a venue due to targets (small) and distance (beyond even former guidelines).

And being a shooter, I’d not return to a match because the targets were too close and dangerous before I’d not go to because I had a miss or two.
But hey, if you can shoot, you can shoot. If you can’t well, you complain because the targets are too small or too far.

So, Less than ten yards is UNSAFE, according to manufacturers.  So, basically ALL CAS matches and many WBAS matches are unsafe.

Did they comment on target size, distance from the ground and support mechanism, or was this just a blanket statement to "cover?"  Was it jacketed, lead, or all bullets?

The real question is at what rifle and pistol distances, with appropriate targets, would people NOT return to shoot a match?  I have witnessed people not returning to a venue due to targets (small) and distance (beyond even former guidelines).

Does it really matter? When you’re standing there in front of a judge and he says “the target manufacturer said no closer than ten yards and you put them at three feet?”

The process to register on both the Cowboy Action Shooting Forum and this Wild Bunch Action Shooting Forum are exactly the same- it is identical software.

To be sure we weren't missing something, I went into the administration side of the software, and there were a small handful of folks pending registration- awaiting validation. This means they had not yet responded to their validation email, but I went ahead and jut confirmed their registrations manually to ease that for them.

There is no conspiracy against Wild Bunch.

Obviously, to me at least, there is something different. They can’t register here, yet can go to the cowboy wire, register, and are able to question registration here.

  12. About every other day, there is a question posted on the SASS Wire about registering here. If SASS supports Wild Bunch so much, why do they make it SO hard for new shooters to register here? Is it a mistake or a deliberate attempt to do so? That’s a rhetorical question.
    CC? You have an answer?
Just like the five years I hosted the New Mexico State Wild Bunch State Championship at Founder’s Ranch, just minutes away from the SASS headquarters and always offered free entry to the match, always a free dinner to anyone in the SASS office who would come. Want to guess how many ever showed up?

EOT 2024 can't be the barometer for the future of WB.

Why? Because it doesn’t fit your narrative? For 10-12 years, the national and world championships sell out. You change the rules and it doesn’t sell out, by a large margin.
To me, that’s about as good a barometer as possible. Cause and effect.

    Good day all,

Just for consideration, keep in mind why the rifle power factor was dropped in the updated rules.

WB needs people to try it and it has to be easy for them to try.

Our #1 goal right now is growing WB. We really really have to grow it by a pretty good margin.

By removing the power factor, people from CAS can just grab their standard CAS load and try it.

Then if they enjoy it, they can easily continue without major time or equipment investment.

It has already completed the checkmark as proof of concept and is growing.

We can't hang up the progress right away by fine tuning things that detract the progress.

I know, myself and at least 5 , maybe 10 people that don't have time to add loading 158 grain ammo on top over everything else we load or do.

I would just stop AGAIN shooting WB and so would they. It's purely a time issue for most of us.

Besides, We are talking about the least considered firearm with the least round count in the game. WHY are we thinking it needs to get harder right now to draw in

    new blood ?

Please think about the growth for now, how to make it easier for people to get in the game and try it.

That is the most important and pressing issue for WB. Everything else can come after.....

    Just something to think about,

    Have a fantastic week,

    CC Moonshine

Just like every other rule change made in the last ten years “to get people to try it”, thinking dropping the rifle power factor will get anyone to try it is just bull produced fertilizer. What it did do and will continue to do is drive dedicated shooters away. Just look at EOT 2024. What was it down? 50-60 shooters? EOT sold out last year at 175ish. This year there were just over 100 shooters. As I’ve stated many, many times, the same complainers will continue to complain and NOT shoot. The one big complainer over on the cowboy wire already said he still won’t shoot because he can’t have an ambi safety on his Traditional gun. He was also that said years ago he would shoot when he could load 7 in the mag. Guess what? He still don’t shoot it. And won’t. He’ll just keep whining. I’m not sure why he wanted seven in the magazine. He can’t count to five in his revolvers. How does he expect to count to seven in his magazines?

A 158 grain bullet at 1000 fps out of a 20" barrel is a piece of cake if that was what we were expected to load.  I don't bother because the power factor is 60, so I doubt my 125s are more than 900 fps.  I could probably bump them to 1200 or even more out of the rifle if that was what was required, but I don't think it'd enhance the game at all for them to require me to do so.

If people really cared about power factor, the power factor for 45 ACP should be raised to at least 165, if not 175.  A handgun at that power is much harder to shoot fast than one at 150.  A 45 ACP with a 10 pound recoil spring and 150 pf ammo is a mouse fart compared to a 16 pound spring and 180+ pf (factory type) hard ball loads.

Any one that shoots a 10# recoil spring with even a 150PF is inviting trouble. Broken firing pin springs, frame, slide and barrel battering, short spring life.
