Well, leather base pads are now OK, but rubber is not yet OK. Is there an advantage that rubber offers that leather does not? Does bumping a rubber base pad cause the magazine to be inserted with more force? Is there some mechanical advantage to rubber that I didn't recognize? Seems to me that if something other than the metal base plate is approved, the material of the base pad shouldn't make any difference. I'd prefer to use rubber base pads to absorb the shock of the magazine hitting the ground.

Some Dan Wesson 1911s, otherwise legal for Modern category, have an integral rib machined into the top of slide. Would this be legal? From WB shooters handbook: No external “rib” allowed on top of slide. This means no external rib such as a BoMar may be attached to the top of the slide by screws, welding, or any other means. The top of the slide may be flattened, serrated, and/or matted to reduce glare. Original Colt Gold Cup ribs are legal. Opinions? Interpretations?

Back 40, Most opinions I hear are that cowboys aren't interested in shooting wild bunch because of 'that new-fangled 1911' or don't want to learn a different gun-handling technique (1911 or 97/12) or like the big and close cowboy game or don't want to commit resources to the 1911 and 97/12. They are comfortable with their level of expertise and accomplishment in cowboy. Rightfully so and congratulations to them! Then there are those who welcome another challenge with a drive to master wild bunch, or at least become a contender in it. Oklahoma Dee and Alamo Andy and Shootin Iron Miller (Texas) come to mind about mastering the WB game. IMO the scoring system isn't the issue about participation in WBAS. The presentation IS an issue for many accustomed to time, misses, and Ps and who want to analyze performance on any one stage, but i don't hear it as a deal breaker. Maybe my hearing impairment has blocked those messages. Software can allow presentation of both points and time-based scores so why not do it? Looking at the WB scores from WR and EoT presented only as stage points indicates the order of finish, not the cause of high or low points which is of interest to many but not all. Do cowboy shooters use a sixgun or a semiauto for self-defense? For those whose carry weapon is a semiauto pistol, WB offers one way to become proficient in handling (mag changes, clearing stoppages, etc) and marksmanship. I'd like to see WB grow in participation, and my sense is that WB has grown, thanks to efforts by you and many others including the match and side match innovations by Dusty Boddams, Goatneck Clem, and others. Is that Doughboy category fun? Yep. But to each their own game! Personally, If it goes bang, and I have ammo for it, I'll shoot it whether it revolves or slides, levers or cranks, slides or breaks open. I haven't met a firearm that I didn't enjoy shooting. So do I prefer WB to Cowboy? Yep. Would I prefer to crank a bolt rifle instead of operating a lever rifle? Yep. Would I enjoy wild bunch as much while shooting a plastic pistol? Yep! But there is just something about John Brownings creation of 1911 that turns me on more than other firearms, even the classic 1860 Army or 1861 Navy (or Open Tops and Conversions).

Of those who have slugged the bore on their M96, and found the bore diameter to be larger that 0.264", what was the bore diameter? I have two barrels slugged at 0.266" and both appear to be in excellent condition.

Trooper, congratulations on the turn out. That match should have satisfied all of the gunpowder addicts, including the crank-action bolt gunners!. Sounds like you have a solid base of shooters looking forward to another match.

BK, Another way to structure your matches, both BAMM and GAMM is to design two scenarios, one as sniper match shooting seated and rested with five or six targets from 75 to 125 yards; and close combat match standing (with sling if desired) at targets about 60 yards. Distances depend on available range space. Smaller targets for shorter ranges. How many rounds? For BAMM sniper you can shoot from 15 to 25 rounds depending on time available. GAMM from 8 , up to 24 if reloads on the clock are allowed and time is available. If reloads on the clock are NOT allowed, record the time for each 8-rd clip, add them together for a total. For BAMM close combat you can shoot from 10 to 15. GAMM from 8 to 16 if reloads on the clock are allowed and time is available. If reloads on the clock are NOT allowed, record the time for each clip, add them together for a total.. Targets for sniper are 16" squares from 75 to 100 yds, with the 125 yd target at 20h" x 15w". For close combat the targets are about 20"h x 15"h. For those of us who forget to breathe while shooting, the sniper match at 25 rounds is exhilarating! The GAMM shooters want to shoot more rounds than the BAMM shooters! Garands require a minimum amount of gas to cycle, so velocities are up to about 1800 fps with a 170 gr bullet. In my experience Bolt action rifles, in 30-06 or 7.5 Swiss for sure, can run as low as 1100 fps for targets inside 100 yds, maybe 1500+ fps for longer distances, both with 170 gr bullets. The K31 is fast, and when shot rested by a southpaw is extremely fast - left hand on the pistol grip and right hand on the bolt handle.

Kid, I was surely sad about missing that match. And the Texas State WB match that followed. Next year I hope to rejoin the matches!

This is another WB match to include in your October schedule, along with the Oklahoma State WB match two weekends earlier. BAMM & GAMM will barely whet your appetite for putting lead on steel! I will.miss this match to do physical therapy, a huge disappointment, hope to rejoin next year. Y'all have fun!!
