What model 1911 do you like/use for WB?
Doc Holloman replied to Doc Holloman's topic in The Wild Bunch Wire
I took your suggestion and bought a .45ACP cartridge gauge. I checked the 150 rounds I had set aside for our May club match and had a 5% reject rate. Surprised it was thar high. I would hope Mags aren't a problem. After our March shoot I bought 10 new Chip McCormick mags, which were what I was using at CD. I changed out my mag release spring in the Kimber as I had a couple of times my mag came loose during CDs. I had installed an extended mag release and the spring that came with it was pretty weak. I also changed the recoil spring in my backup RIA. The 12 pound spring I was running as amn experiment I think was causing it to cycle to fast. Shooting the 1911 seems to be like flying a helicopter -- never trimmed out and always adjusting. Now if I could solve the mysteries of the 1897 (mostly operator error, probably.) -

I will give it a look. Although my personal preference is against stainless guns. No specific reason, just never had a stainless gun that I really liked. -

I replaced all my mags with new ones from Chip McCormick. As for ammo, I have been shooting 230gr, coated, from where ever I can find it. Have to take what I can get these days, particularly when limited to lead bullets. Just getting ramped up to reload. -
New official Wild Bunch side matches

We haven't shot DB yet but if the BAMM targets we shot last week are any indication: We shot 20 rounds. 10 "Sniper" supported at 4 targets I would estimate at 150-175 yards, and 10 rounds "Combat" offhand at 4 targets at 75 yards. -

1400 might work for 45-70 but it will be difficult to keep to with .30-06 or .30-40 for Doughboy. My load books dont have data for velocities that low. -

Oh, I have put a lot of work into both guns. Both are still problematic. -

Would a model 95 with a fixed rubber recoil pad be OK? The TR stage rules are silent on recoil pads and the main WB rule is just ambiguous enough that it can be read two ways. I have my eye on an 1895 on an auction site and wondering if it is legal. -
I'm currently using a Kimber Classic Custom for WB, with a RIA Rock Standard as my backup. I was wondering whether there was a Favored Modern 1911 model out there, the way the Ruger Vaquero seems to be the favorite in CAS. At my club the Traditional shooteres seem to favor Springfields, but there seems to be no clear consensus on Modern. DOC sends.

I had my local leather shop make me a slide holding two shotgun rounds. I ended up needing them this past weekend (plus one spare shell that I had the foresight to put in my pocket) at Comancheria Days when my 1897 started acting up. We also had one 7 round shotgun stage where the slide came in handy. A month ago I staged a a shell on the line and the wind had blown it off when I reached for it. Doc sends.

Looking for a pair of military style low boots/field shoes/boondockers typical for 1890-1920 in a wide size (10EE). The details don't have to be perfect as I will be wearing them under leggings, but they need to be smooth toed with a non-lug sole. The usual sources (What Price Glory, At the Front) dont have wide sizes. Same goes for sources for 6 inch civilian work boots. Unfortunately I have feet like swim fins, short and wide. Any ideas? Doc sends.

Basic question: Dropped round?
Doc Holloman replied to Doc Holloman's topic in Wild Bunch Rules Forum
Thanks. I had a belt slide made that holds two shotgun rounds for this eventuality, and am having one made that holds two rifle rounds. Extra mag with one round can go in the last pouch or back pocket (for those stages that call for 6 mags.) Just being sure. -
If I were to drop or eject a live round during a stage (say in the process of clearing a 1911 malfunction , or an 1897 misfeed), is it permissible to replace that round from the "body" (belt loop or pocket?) I have heard of shooters carrying an extra 1911 mag with one round, just for this eventuality. Just want to be sure. Doc sends.

Looking for rare Winchester butt plate
Doc Holloman replied to Doc Holloman's topic in The Wild Bunch Wire
I have considered it, but my wood finishing skills are pretty mediocre. -
Just getting into reloading handgun ammo for CAS/Wild Bunch and am in information overload, and sticker shock when it comes to powder. I have previously only reloaded shot shells, using Clays pretty much exclusively. I plan to start out reloading .45ACP and .38-40, adding .45 Colt later. I have been considering trying to locate a supply of Trail Boss, but the prices people are asking are steep. I noticed in one of my reloading manuals that the loads and performance for Clays are not too far from those for Trail Boss. I have some Clays in stock and the Clays I find online runs a bit cheaper than Trail Boss. So my question: does Trail Boss have any notable advantage over Clays in loading .45ACP (230 gr coated) or .38-40 (180 gr?)
-
Have found that coated bullets feed much more reliably in my Kimber 1911 that plain cast lead. So my question: The reloading manuals I have looked at don't seem to have data for coated bullets. Do I use the same data as lead bullets of the same weight? Doc sends?

Looking for rare Winchester butt plate
Doc Holloman replied to Doc Holloman's topic in The Wild Bunch Wire
My carbine was made in 1912. It's in .30-40. No joy on any of the listed sources. -
I am looking for a butt plate for a Winchester 1895 Saddle Ring Carbine. Winchester, in their infinite wisdom, used a unique buttplate on the 95 SRC and Musket. It is curved with a small tang, but is a different shape than the standard rille part. it has the door for the stock trap. I have been looking for this part for several years. Have tried the online old Winchester parts dealers. Almost bought a whole parts gun just for the butt plate (was outbid on Gunbroker). Have been tempted to say the heck with it and put a stock from a 94 or a 95 rile on it. Any leads appreciated.

Dumb question of the day: are there any velocity limits for the TR or Doughboy categories? Lead bullets required (unless otherwise stated) of course. -
Philippine Constabulary Carbine BAMM legal?
Doc Holloman replied to Doc Holloman's topic in Wild Bunch Rules Forum
Actually I haven't bought the rifle yet. Just watching it on an auction site. I am pretty new and am intrigued by the new Doughboy side match, but don't handload (yet) and the only commercial Cowboy rifle ammo I can find is 30-40. The Constabulary Carbine has always intrigued me. The on on the auction site might be a fake, but if so, would prob ably fall into the "faithful reproduction" category. Speaking of faithful reproductions: do the Krag ri=fles that were cut down to carbines by Bannermans or the DCM in the early 20th century qualify? I know that reloading a Krag is a competitive disadvantage compared to a rifle fed by a stripper clip. I have 03s, SMLEs, 98s, even Lebels and Berthier's in my collection, but no legal ammo. Doc sends. -
Philippine Constabulary Carbine BAMM legal?
Doc Holloman replied to Doc Holloman's topic in Wild Bunch Rules Forum
Sorry, I meant to put this in the rules folder -
Subject line basically says it, is the Krag Phillipine Constabulary Carbine ( a Krag carbine modified at Springfield Arsenal with a shortened Rifle Stock for the Philippines govt) considered an issue rifle for BAMM matches ?

I'm looking for a decent campaign hat. The one I have is crappy - it doesn't want to stay in shape with my head. (Instead of oval it want to go back to round.) I'm willing to pay for something decent -- just hoping that doesn't necessarily mean a $230 Stetson. Doc sends.
