Prefer 20" barrel, but if it's longer, I don't mind chopping it. If you have any reservations on me chopping a barrel, I'm happy to be offered a sacrificial lamb on the cheap.

Thinking face to face at border town or EOT if you're not local. Willing to pay anywhere from $400 $600 depending on the bluing/wear. Also 1911 mag pouches for a 2" belt, not black.

This is just a suggestion, but get your C&R and buy one on gunbroker.  Model 12s are available there all the time and you can get one in any condition you want.  With a C&R you will not have to pay for a transfer and the C&R will basically pay for itself with that one purchase.  Model 12s are basically all C&R because they haven't been made for over 50 years.

I've never looked into C&Rs, is that a relatively painless process?

You fill out a piece of paper, send a copy to the ATF and to your chief LEO wherever you live, and the ATF sends you a piece of paper that lets you buy old guns through the mail anytime you want.  It also will get you a discount at a bunch of gun related places.  It's pretty much a no-brainer, every one of us should have one.
