Model 12?

Recommended Posts

Howdy!

I just shoot my first WB match this month and loved it! I used one of the new 1887 lever guns offered by Cimarron and saw that everyone else was shooting 97's. I am wondering if I were to buy one of them, which one and why? I like the 87 but I intend on having the "drop two" mod done to it so I would not longer be able to stoke the tube.

Awesome ! That's great that you jumped into WB, thanks to the new rules, I'm glad you got to try WB with your 87 !

Now that you know you like it, yes a Model 12 would be perfect for WB.

After you get a model 12 contact Boggus Deal for one of his firing pins.

Definitely a good option once you find one. Boggus doesn't care much for me, but he has good gun parts. 😂

Good luck and welcome,

Lassiter, chief progenitor of the "drop two" mod, says that an 1887 CAN be returned to stoke mode with a simple part which is easily installed.  Yes to the Model 12; yes to the 1897 second, but I just ran a WB match with a fellow shooting a very slick 1887, and he was running just fine with it.

Cheers,

FJT

CC,

First, thank you for the kind words. I appreciate it very much. Truly.
Second, I don’t know you well enough personally to like or dislike. I just don’t like or agree with things you’ve said and done.
Two different things.

Boggus

I have considered buying a second '87 and just continuing to shoot the stock one for WB. based on my search over the last few days, a brand new '87 is cheaper than buying a Model 12.

When Model 12 hunting, do NOT get a 3” Heavy Duck gun. I have not been able to make them run with 2 3/4” shells. As previously mentioned, the Lightweight versions don’t hold 6 shells. All Model 12s are takedowns and all will slam fire.
I see some dealers advertise like those are super rare features.

Thank you for the info. I was curious about the Heavy versions so you answered that for me. Prices are much higher than I expected. seems like $500 is the cheapest for a decent one that's not pitted upon Gunbroker and I have seen several in the thousands. I called around to all local pawn shops yesterday with no luck. I will continue to shoot my 87 until I find a good deal on one.

One rule change I hope that the TGs take up is allowing Model 12s in 20 gauge.  We now allow SxS 20ga guns so the Model 12 should not be too objectionable.(The 97 was never made in 20ga.)

Hi Doc,

I know that more then one person has suggested that change. Be sure your WB-TG knows about your thoughts.

Thanks,

CC

As for a 20 ga, remember parts are about 10 harder to find than 12 ga. For every 20 gauge made, there was probably 100 12 gauges. Most all the parts will not interchange.

Before you buy a 12, check the manufacture date by the serial number,  Early ones wee chambered for 2 1/2 inch shells.  Actually, early 97s were as well.

All 12 ga Model 12s were 2 3/4”. Except for Heavy Duck which were 3”. There were no short chambered 12 ga.

Dan,

When I got my model 12 it also had a 30 inch barrel. I got lucky and found a twenty two inch barrel with a rib on eBay for 125.00. If you want to keep the gun original search for an extra barrel you may get lucky.

That's a good idea. I will look around. Even if it's another 30" I could cut down and preserve the original.
