  1. I have ordered a 15 pound recoil spring

The 1911 runs a balancing act between it's recoil and main springs.  Springs that are not balanced can lead to poor functioning of the gun.

The factory springs are 16# recoil and 23# main springs.  This matches factory and mil-spec ammo that makes about 190 Power Factor.

A 15# recoil runs well with about a 19# main spring.  (This is what I run in WB guns.)

I would guess a 14# recoil spring would like a 17# main spring.  But I have never had to go so light to get a Wild Bunch 1911 to function well (running about 160 Power Factor).

Too light a recoil and main spring will toss empties more than 12 feet from the gun.  And sometimes bang up the mouth of the fired cases.

Too heavy a recoil and main spring set and the 1911 will just dribble cases out of the gun - 4 feet or less from where you stand.  Or even worse, have a few failures to eject the fired case.

Between those distances of ejected cases - the springs match the power factor of the ammo well, and the gun should both function reliably and not suffer battering of the frame or slide.

Joe is correct on that ejection distance. The techs at Ruger say a spent round should land between 3' and 9' from the shooter, they may roll or bounce farther away but 3' to 9' is how far they should land from the shooter.

  2. Thanks GJ. That ought to get me some good results. Maybe we will be able to shoot BAMM at WR. I shoot the Mosin every week at the range here but ammo is getting a little harder to find. I keep most of the copper out of the bore on the Mosin. I find it a little easier if I do copper removal every couple of weeks.

  3. I am looking for some reduced loads for 7.62X54. If anyone can help I would appreciate it. Any powder with loads preferably for the 150 or lighter bullet range. It can be for copper jacketed or lead with or without gas check.

I usually shoot the milspec ammo but Shirttail would like to try some Bamm shooting and I'm don't think she would like shooting milspec in her M44.

    Thanks in advance.

  4. Jackaroo, if someone puts a pistol down with the slide locked back and the slide falls and a round discharges, that pistol is in serious need of repair! While a 1911 can be made to go full auto, it ain't easy and a stuck firing pin will not cause it to. A stuck firing pin will not allow the cartridge to ride up the face of the slide and chamber. If you have a stuck firing pin, the only way to load a round would be to single load a round in the chamber and drop the slide. It might fire then but will not chamber the next round.

If the pistol fired when placed on a prop, and the slide closing, it would fire when the slide is dropped with the gun in hand. That is for the safety notch on the hammer.

    Stuck firing pin.

You are right BD I have had it happen, the gun becomes a canoe anchor cause that's all its good for, the round absolutely will not feed.

    EDIT: Fixed

  5. If it is not 180 it is not 180!

Also I have found that I get more felt recoil with lighter bullets when I make power factor.

I have noticed the same thing. Shirttail shoots 230g bullets with about 160+ pf. She did not like the 200g bullets.

  6. I don't care either way. I think you all are over estimating the surge in "new" shooters that WB will experience due to being able to load seven in a mag. A lot of the places I have shot WB has shooters that cannot keep track of five rounds shot, imagine what they will be able to do with seven. I have shot monthly shoots all the way up to EOT. I think it is going to be a mess for the silent majority in this game.
