  1. I wanted to take a minute to recognize a couple of behind the scenes hard working Wild Bunch shooters. We rarely hear from or about them.  They just quietly keep the wire functioning properly.  Our primary wire moderator since the start of the WB wire has been Nellie Blue.  Some of you have asked about the security questions you have to answer to join the wire.  Believe it or not, before these were imposed, there were a lot of problems with people interfering with the wire.  After these questions were implemented, our problems decreased significantly.  At any time that I go on the wire there are at least a dozen “guests” and sometimes many more viewing the wire.  Of course, we encourage people having a look, but thanks to Nellie Blue and her hard work, our wire continues to function seamlessly.

Recently, Nellie has been shooting Wild Bunch less and asked for a volunteer to help and become the primary moderator for our wire.  With our great appreciation, Dusty Boddams stepped up and volunteered even though he says it has been a learning experience.  I am told that even with Dusty stepping in, Nellie has continued to stay in the background helping.

Would you join me in giving a great big cowboy thanks to Nellie for all her work and to Dusty for stepping up to the plate.

  2. Hi J Frank

Yes, please plug away.  We should have done that for you.  It was a great article, very informative.  Well done.

Serenity and I are commiserating with you right now.  This is the first time we have missed the Arizona State Wild Bunch match in years.  They won't let us across the border right now.  Our winter in Canada here has not been as bad as what you are going through.  Yesterday I would have said it with a smile but today we are digging out of 8" to 10" of snow with a high of 20.  Sure miss Arizona.

    Thanks for the article.

  3. Registration is now open for those people who want to shoot Wild Bunch at EOT 2021 even if they are not registered for the cowboy match.  To find the updated registration form, go to sassnet.com and click on the EOT section in the top right and then click on the "Register Form Download".  Fill it out and send it in (electronically is best).

Details for Wild Bunch Side Matches still have to be worked out.  They will be posted as soon as possible.  Registration is limited.

  4. There is every intention of holding a BAMM match and other side matches at EOT.  However, with everything that must be put together, these details have not been finalized.  It is our hope to have more details in the next couple of weeks.

While we may not have too much flexibility, we are looking for feedback.  Would WB shooters rather have the WB Side Matches on Friday, June 18, Monday June 21 or Tuesday June 22?

    Thanks

  5. Hello everyone

SASS is creating the new books as we speak.  There will be a little delay early in the week as they focus fully on the EOT registrations starting tomorrow.

The new documents will be circulated to the WB ROC and the Ambassadors as soon as they are available for final review.  Assuming that no major issues are found, the new rules will be published immediately afterward.

There are a number of clarifications, some minor penalty changes and a couple of great side match suggestions emanating from Texas and Oklahoma.  The 2021 rules become effective as soon as they are published.

Each year the ROC takes all suggestions they have received throughout the year and considers each one during each yearly process.  Any suggestions or comments made on the wire are saved and reviewed.

On behalf of the ROC, I would like to thank everyone for their patience.

  6. I don’t need to add too much to GJ’s post.  It is much too early to finalize the round count for WB at EOT.  There is a huge amount of coordination with cowboy as we must synchronize with their stages, although we plan to move targets out and add targets.

Based on the fact that there will be six stages a day, the pistol round count will be a little lower than GJ suggested.  The high will be an average of 28 pistol rounds per stage.  Take heed of GJ’s comments and bring lots of extra ammo for warmup and side matches.

I am sure that the Match Director will get a more accurate round count to everyone well before the match, as well as information about side matches.

  7. FWR

Remember that CAS and WBAS have some differences.  I used PaleWolf’s explanation for its clarity and how it shows the different outcomes.  However, the one difference in the rules deals with the very thing that you brought up.

The interpretation by the WBAS ROC is that the words “use of illegally acquired ammunition” mean the act of firing that ammunition during the course of fire no matter what you are aiming at.

It should be noted that in Wild Bunch, the shooter has two outs.  First, as in cowboy, the shooter can jack the overloaded rounds out of the gun before putting it down.  Second, only in Wild Bunch, the shooter may place the gun safely down with the action open and there is no penalty as long as there is not a live round in the chamber.

  8. Hi Kingsnake

The problem with calling Zona, evil, is that he takes that as a compliment.  Of course we mean it only in the best possible way.

We always look forward to this shoot.  We are hoping things might improve in time for us to attend.  If not, it will be the first one we have missed since it has been held at Cowtown.

For all you Wild Bunch shooters, this is always a fun shoot.  Put it on your list.

  9. Hi Trooper

Hope things are doing well down there.

While you make a reasonable point, it is impossible to write a rule for every circumstance.  This rule was written to cover a multitude of actions including deliberately overloading, in case you jack one out.  In Wild Bunch, we have given the shooter two outs when they overload.  One is to do nothing.  If you put your gun down with three live rounds left, as long as a live round is not left in the chamber it is a no call.  If you want to be safer, just jack the rounds out.

We cannot get into a shooter's mind, so when they shoot the extra rounds, the penalties stand.

Appreciate the common sense comments in this particular case but we have to have the rule cover much more.

  10. When a shooter overloads a firearm, Wild Bunch follows the Cowboy guidelines with one exception.  In Wild Bunch, there is no penalty for leaving a live round in a firearm UNLESS it is in the chamber.

Therefore the Cowboy procedure below applies EXCEPT #5

    COWBOY:

    Overloading the rifle

Overloading a rifle on a stage is not a safety issue. The safety comes into play if the shooter

has any rounds left in the rifle after he/she has fired the rifle and committed to the next gun.

Then, and only then, a safety shall be issued if a live round is left anywhere in the rifle.

Should the shooter realize that they have loaded too many rounds and safely ejects those

    rounds, it’s a no call.

Should the shooter fire more rounds than called for in the stage, it would be a “P” (edited)

    - Hipshot SASS #7

    What’s the Call?

    Application of related existing rules/penalties

    - PaleWolf Brunelle, SASS #2495 (edited 2020)

Stage calls for 9 rounds in the rifle. Shooter loads 10 rounds at the loading table:

    1. Shooter shoots 9 rounds and ejects the 10th round…safely restages rifle “open & empty”.

NO CALL – NO MSV penalty for overloading – Rifle is considered “safe to leave shooter’s

    hands”.

    2. Shooter kicks out the first round and then shoots the next 9 rounds.

“P” + miss (use of “illegally acquired” ammunition)

    3. Shooter shoots 5 rounds, then kicks one out, and then shoots the next 4 rounds.

“P” + miss (use of “illegally acquired” ammunition)

    4. Shooter shoots 9 rounds, then fires the 10

    th

    round to clear the rifle.

“P” for firing more rounds than required for the stage (whether a target is hit or not)

    5. Shooter shoots 9 rounds then puts down open rifle and then shoots the next gun.

MSV for an unfired round remaining in long gun action or magazine - DOES NOT APPLY IN WB.

WTC:  In this case the call is a P + 3 misses + the shooter incurs the extra time taken for the extra rounds shot.

  11. The Wild Bunch Action Shooting Range Operations Committee (WB ROC) has been discussing the issue of Stage DQs since early new year.  We had planned to discuss it at some length when we met at EOT, but everyone knows how that went.

The WB ROC will be holding discussions in the next few weeks on our rules and that is one of the areas for discussion.  While there is no magic answer, the committee understands the concerns and will work toward a solution.

  12. I would like to congratulate Beartrap on becoming the new WB Ambassador for Southern California.  He joins Tully Mars who covers northern California and Nevada.  We appreciate Beartrap stepping up to this important position.

He replaces Coffee, who has moved to Texas.  Coffee will become a WB Ambassador at Large.  Our congratulations go out to Coffee as well, for his appointment to the SASS Advisory Committee.

Well done and thanks to both of you for your support of Wild Bunch Action Shooting.

  13. Boomstick

Your first question did not make mention of category, but one of your replies asked about Traditional.

WBAS Handbook, Page 5, Traditional Pistols

Only non-adjustable “military style” simple blade rear and front sights allowed.  The

10-8 National Match and the Harrison Design 003 are approved rear sights.

    • Front sights may be dovetailed, pinned, or staked.

    • Sights may be the color of the slide or any combination of the slide color, including,

but not limited to, blue, black, or natural stainless (natural colored) steel.  The back

of a colored front sight may be polished to natural steel color.

Therefore, in Traditional, no bead is allowed.

  14. Well, J. Frank, you sure know how to stir things up, don't you. ;D

You have your answer concerning the Top Lady but we will clarify it in the Handbook for next year.

We will discuss the official category titles but have to keep in mind treating both sexes equally.  Serenity makes sure I am reminded of that!  If we use the term Man Modern, then we can use the term Lady Modern.  Doesn't really sound right does it.

  15. After seeing a number of the State WB applications, I just wanted to remind everyone that as of 2020, Wild Bunch changed their categories to more conform with cowboy.

There are always two WB categories.  They are Traditional and Modern.  They are open to any WB shooter.  Further, there are protected categories: Ladies Traditional and Ladies Modern plus all of these in Senior for 65 and older.

    Thanks

  16. Largo - well at least you got a little it going. :)

I have heard a lot of great things about both the NM State WB and the Idaho State WB.  I am envious of you getting to go.  This month has been great for sanctioned WB matches.  I heard that the Missouri State WB went very well and the shooters were sure enjoying the OK State match that finished today.  They had 47 shooters and perfect weather in OK.  Getting ready for 2022?

We're lucky to have so many matches available considering the times.

Without being able to cross the border, we have had to be satisfied with our monthly matches.

    Everyone enjoy!
