I just picked up a decent '37 vintage M12, looked it over, and went out & shot it. The stock seemed to be longer than it should, but it appears to be a M12 stock, although the finish/patina doesn't match the fore end. Checking it against my five 1897's, it had an inch and a half longer LOP. Some masking tape, spacer blocks, wood clamps, and a finish blade in my miter saw fixed it.  ;)

I'm 6'4"/300 pounds, so for it to feel "long" to me is saying something.  ;D

M12 buttstocks are not normally longer than 14" LOP.  Of course, adding a thick rubber recoil pad to a stock originally made for a thin hard butt plate (if not cut down appropriately) easily adds 3/4" to LOP.

Yours in that picture does not quite have the lines of a factory stock, so I would guess it's a replacement to obtain the long LOP.

Good luck, GJ

If you take the stock off, there should be a number stamped into the face where it meets the receiver, if it’s original. I believe it could be a factory stock that’s been refinished or one from another Model 12.

That stock was HEAVILY sanded by someone who did not understand the importance of protecting the wood profile during a stock refinish.  It lost a little strength, but probably not enough to lead to immediate stock damage.

Good luck, GJ
