  1. I've used 4.5 grs. of Bullseye under a 230 gr. RN for a long time. It always cycles my slide and is not too punishing. A very reliable load. Church key
  2. I use PP for .40 S&W, not for .45 ACP as I still use Bullseye for it. Too lazy to change my powder measure. PP pushes my coated bullets faster than the lead ones and works fine. I'll use it if I cannot get BE. Church Key
  3. Had the jam two matches in a row; next to the last round gets stuck pointing up while feeding. Requires releasing the mag and forcibly pulling it out. Found the culprit the 2nd time, a Colt with Tripp innards. Into the trash. Replaced with a complete Tripp. Had it happen again at the next match with two different magazines. Ordered four more Tripp's from Brownells. Life is too short to use crappy equipment. Church Key
  4. An excellent class; plus Loco Poco and Nawlins managed to bring some of their fine weather with them as the following two days (Sun. and Mon.) reached almost 70 degrees here. Now we are waiting for a foot of snow over the next couple of days. Oops, just realized I'm mixed up, as they did not come up from the deep south, but down from New York. Will blame them for our snow on the first day of spring. Anyhow enjoyed the refresher. As a side note, do not mess with the WB shooter using a grenade for an ornament. Church Key
  5. A loaded magazine in a pistol means the gun is loaded regardless of the slide position. This is opening a can of worms and in my opinion is stupid for the sport. You are not following your own rules. I don't understand what this is supposed to accomplish. Church Key
  6. For some unknown reason, I've always used the slingshot method for 1911 slide releasing. In my last two matches have gotten a blood blister on my release hand. I guess the best cure is to start pressing the slide stop to drop the slide. Wondering how hard it is to retrain myself to do this? My gun is a Ruger SR 1911 which is a Modern class. Probably will end up with an extended slide stop. Has anyone else worked through this issue? This years matches seem to have a larger pistol round count than in the past, so more magazine changes and chances to screw up. Life is good!
  7. Tried to remove the old sight; no luck. Ended up denting a brass punch. My local shop removed it after using aluminum, brass, and finally steel punches. They had to spend some time fitting the new sight as it was slightly oversize. My advice if it happens to you, is to send the gun back to Ruger on their dime. Church Key
  8. Ruger gave me two options: Send the entire gun back at their expense or have them send me a new sight. I got a new sight. They admitted the earlier sights were prone to breaking; have been redesigned. Tried to install it myself with no luck. Severely dented a brass punch. My local gunsmith went through an aluminum, brass and finally a steel punch. Got the new sight installed for $10; well worth it. Life is better now.
  9. Was shooting a WB match at Thurmont MD today and stated to several folks that my Ruger is the best 1911 I've ever owned. Have had several Colts, Springfield's and a Norinco; prefer the Ruger over all of them. Shooting it the third stage when my front sight sheared off the dovetail base. Need to keep my big mouth shut. Slide off to Ruger on Monday; will use the Norinco as backup. Need to remember the engineering rule about the "perverse nature of inanimate objects."
  10. IDPA allows for one finger alert; a second call is a MDQ. Seems to me to be reasonable.
  11. I've owned multiple 1911's, including a Colt made in 1916 that I foolishly sold; Duh! In my opinion, Ruger is the best one for me. It has all the mandatory options at a reasonable price. Use good magazines and it's foolproof.
  12. I use the Springfield stainless 7-rounders. Got a few more on sale from Midway for $14 each.
