I would have liked to be there. so it wore everyone out. nobody complained about not shooting enough that's for sure. really you averaged about 4 minutes a shooter and at the state match and every where else I have been it averages about 3 minutes.  you could always throw in a 3 mag stage in the middle of the match or just lay the rifle down for one stage or 4  shotgun for a stage or two. heck, shooting stages like this you could go for a 4 stage match. originally we used to shoot 6 stages and it was wearing everyone out so we went to five for our monthly matches.  the brass picking seems to take all the time and wear people out the most. I haven't done it yet but since we shoot from a closed in prop house I had thought you could cut a access panel at the bottom of the wall and put a basket under that to catch the brass after it was swept out. that way each piece is not being policed individually and the shooter walks over and gets his brass out of the basket. what about those brass pickers that look like pecan pickers? wonder how those would work for what we are doing? dusty boddams

largokc, ;D it being a spring and not gas operated I don't think there would be any difference in velocity between no spring and a 22 pound spring. that said  I didn't realize that  lighter springs were controversial. top shooters have been tailoring the spring to the load for many years , at least back into the late sixties , early seventies. I'm sure it goes further than that. does anyone remember the phrase  "powder springs" and not in reference to the MAC 10? that was the old guys shooting lighter than ball and putting in lighter springs to accommodate the reduced load.  the 20 and 22 pound springs I think came along because of the plus p rounds and super tight bushings etc.  :o also we can't forget the 45 super can we? that would account for a heavy heavy spring. also one more thought ---stock springs in a govt issue was 16 pounds and designed for standard hardball at about 850 fps. to put it one way that would be a 195.5 power factor so if you're loading a 230 bullet at a power factor of 160ish 30 to 35 less it only makes sense to run a less powerful spring than factory. that would be my thought on it anyway. dusty

jfrank, I think the poll was interesting also. it really has had a lot of life for a dead horse. slight subject change------I figured you would be writing some pistol only stages :)  so what's your round count? are you moving ? stand and deliver? walk me thru one if you don't mind. jfn,ltl, I see exactly what ya'll are saying. I do see how on the stage described you could do better("faster")  by having seven round mags because your running against shotguns and rifles and you are making the choice to go all pistol. I guess most or everyone else went with the long guns?  the stage you describe makes a valid point. still the powers that be are going to cuss and discuss this a lot in the future. if something changes it will be months and months away. (remember the model 12).  I think if a competitor wants pure pistol stages then bend the match directors ear until you get those stages. if they can't figure it out write some stages for them and show them what you would like to see. other than some people not having enough mags, which is easily corrected a stage could be made written for 40 or 50 rounds pistol only  without any problem. we did a Texas 50 stage that was 35 pistol,10 rifle,5 shotgun and it was a lot of fun. did a 25 round shotgun stage a month or 2 ago and it was slightly excessive. hey JFN  did you ever recreate that stage you mentioned and shot it with seven rounders and 5 rounders to see how much real difference there is?  I would be curious to know the results.  dusty

lots of good powders to do both. WST, unique, bullseye, clays, 700x,231, red dot, herco, WSL if you had some jugs of it laying around. it would be best to see what you have or can get.  whatever your running in the 45, if it's working and doing good the 44 mag will work fine with that same powder.......as far as wb specs ,which I take to mean power factor. you need access to a chronograph you have got to make a minimum of 150 pf . everyone I know tries to make at least 160-165 for cushion. a 200 grain bullet has to chrony at 750 to meet the floor. the speed you actually want is 800 feet per second or thereabouts for a power factor of 160........ dusty boddams

;D ;D Howdy Nellie!  how's the wrist? are you going to make state?  we are promising a large time. BD,  sounds like you have got them headed in the right direction. sometimes it just takes a while . we are spoiled rotten where I shoot at because obviously we have fred  but we also have the president of the club, billy bob who is 100% on board with WB as well as several other officers in the club and of course the wild bunch junkies who are the type of shooters that after we finish the 5 stage match we break for lunch and then shoot a BAMM match and sometimes after that we will try one more. time before last was a shotgun only side match 25 shots from the pump guns ,they was so hot you could just about smell burned skin! all you have to do is get just a couple of hi round count stages under there belts and then set back and enjoy. hey you could talk them into letting you and jfrank setup 2 demo stages and let everyone shoot ya'lls and then the balance of theirs and see if they can spot a difference .it would be lots o'fun!  dusty

BD, 10 round wb pistol :'( that's just sad!  talking about all the above, JFN apparently the death of the horse was greatly exaggerated ;) because it has over 1700 hits and 95+ responses . I am one of the shooters that  does not care if the game is played with five or seven.  I don't see the argument of attracting new shooters by loading 2 more rounds in a mag because when you go to IDPA or 3gun games etc. the 1911's are running 9 rounds c&l at start and the poly double stacks are stoked with 15 + rounds or whatever and shooting in a different category for esp or sp etc. I also wonder if rules are changed to draw new shooters will we lose some that we have now?  I often see something stated like " in the real world we shoot from C&L so I'm not going to play this game until you ( fill this in with whatever you want) so it mimics my version of the "real world". the problem with this is the goal posts are a moving target..........excuses, excuses and more  EXCUSES! ;D I think wild bunch should be shown by it's strengths not weaknesses.  we are a shooting competition  not a tactical match ,not a one gun idpa based match. we are here to have fun . not to train for a gunfight. there are a lot of great places to receive that type of training. we master 3 guns. all on the same stage. whenever changes are made it needs to be for what WE want as wild bunch shooters, not for what we think some one we don't know that has never shot a wild bunch match might want. if seven rounds were ever to see light I would want it to be for more shooting not the same or less. the pistol to me is the star of the show. the shotgun is the costar and the rifle is an extra for variety. I like shooting the pistol a lot so naturally I want a lot of pistol shooting. I would gladly trade a few rifle rounds for more pistol rounds if I had to make a choice. I don't see any  problems with seven as far as target presentation or safety or round count. just about everyone I know that shoots wild bunch loads there own ammo and plenty of it.  wild bunch is the best gun game ever played! it's also the biggest  secret never told. if we can all get the word out to various disciplines WB will grow.    dusty boddams

... the number of rounds for a WB match is not small for handgun and rifle.  Do you cast your own bullets and reload them?

The thought came to me this afternoon casting 18 lbs of H&G 68's to get ahead of the inventory curve for future matches.  In addition, cast & reload for the rifle and shotgun

jb , I guess you would call me an avid reloader. I do not cast my own bullets but I do have a good friend who happens to own a bullet making business and he keeps me well stocked. I use a 650 Dillon and I keep plenty of match quality ammo on hand.  dusty boddems

iv'e had good luck out of my  ww2 mags and colt mags and my cm mags but i run 230 rn. about the same profile as a fmj  i did buy some cheap mags when i first started playing this game and they were so out of spec and so poorly made that they became wet mold mags for my leather maker friend.  so i guess they did serve a purpose, just not the one intended!  ;D..............dusty

:D a late thought but rev you could take the early grip safety out and replace it with an a1 grip safety the big hammer will work just fine and no more bite-dusty

OK REV,  what the deal is you have an original 1917 yr model 1911 and the really early ones have a super short grip safety. almost looks bobbed compared to a 1911a1. the cure for your ailment is bandaid brand tough strips applied in the appropriate place it will stay there all day. you don't have chunks of meat flying off you everytime you pull the trigger.we have to pardon the pun but i do have alot of first hand experiance.......scars to prove it!....i shoot the early originals one made 1913 the others1914,1916.problem solved, ;Denjoy that electric smokewagon!---------dusty

i had to do like griff and say other  but actually i have a few colt,bunch of mil spec and some unmarked stainless. had good luck with all. i run these mags hard and if i have a malfunction than that mag is retired. i like the mil spec best not the cheap knockoff's but the mags that sell at the gun shows for around 9-10 bucks. main thing is to really try them not just baby around fill them full , run them dry! you can find out pretty quick if ones going to  be a problem.-dusty
