  1. I think that I mentioned if we could get 150+ shooters we could PROBABLY make 10 posses and so then we could do 6 stages a day for 12 stages.  The time take would end up the same with less standing around but still have enough folks to run a posse.
  2. I need to confirm where we are at for OVERALL scoring.  2017 EOT had a real problem .  We thought we solved it at Winter Range in 2018 but I saw some emails afterwards that tabled the action.  So my question is - Do we break out gender for Overall Scoring or not.  I want to make sure that EVERYONE knows our position before the start of Winter Range

    Thank You

  3. The primary advantage of the striker fired polymer guns that are so prevalent these days is simplicity.  No de-cocker, no thumb safety just point and shoot which is why police depts replaced their revolvers with these types.  Lots to choose from.  I like the M&Ps and have a couple,  I've owned Glocks - solid but felt like bricks.  I'd look at Walter PPQ's as they are great ergonomic guns,  The Springfield XDM's are good but the bore axis is a bit high.  Thing to do is visit and handle as many of the 9mm's in the category and see what feels right and points the most naturally in YOUR hand.  Some brands have some customization capability by swapping out the back-strap with smaller or larger pieces.
  4. If you plan to do both then there are a lot choices.  The Colt would work BUT you are paying premium for the name.  Personally if $1400 were my budget.  I'd purchase a separate gun for each.  Spend say $800 for a Springfield Range Officer if shooting Modern class Wild Bunch and $500 for a Glock or  S&W M&P for 3 gun.
  5. I prefer Total time.  After all that is what everyone compares rank or stage to when they see them posted.  Additionally, it seems inconsistent to say - "well the other shooting sports don't use total time" and then talk about SDQ's which they don't use either.  If we are going to have SDQ's then total time works just fine.  Review some of the scores from a variety of matches as I have and see what happens if someone gets an SDQ and yet shoots a perfect match otherwise,  typically they will still place but not first - usually around 7th.  Which to my mind seems perfect.  Not the total loss of a match like an MDQ but not top five either.

Additionally.  I absolutely hate when my score is somehow affected by what others do in a match.  That's never a problem with total time.  Stage scoring is like grading on the curve - When teachers do that it's because they don't know if their test is "fair".

  6. Couple of quick comments.  The stand alone Wild Bunch Match fee at WR this year was $130.  That's $80 less than the Cowboy match fee.  The Rough Riders decided PRIOR to the event to provide any stand alone Wild Bunch shooter with a Range Bag and supplies were available.  There were approx six stand alone Wild Bunch shooters.  I have NO idea why any stand alone Wild Bunch shooter would not have received a bag.  It is possible that some or all of the fine ladies in registration were not told be they should have been.

We've received over 500 surveys back for Winter Range this year and a healthy amount of comments about the Wild Bunch match.  EACH and EVERY comment was read by the Board and we treat them with the utmost respect (even those for poker which I run and when I get over 20 responses for Poker which is more than actually participated - makes for some interesting thoughts).

Our goal for Wild Bunch is no different than for Cowboy.  To put on the finest match possible.  There are constraints however as we work WITH the Wild Bunch committee and the Wild Bunch Committee Match Director for Posse Marshal selection, for Stage design and for Prize presentation.    This year the Rough Riders as represented by Black Jack Zak and myself had a bit more influence on stage design and target placement but it was a compromise as Zak and Texas Jack would email the stages back and forth with refinements.  I was cc'd and was able to put in my two cents.  Like making sure the Dueling tree was on a down range stage so that we could either paint or return swingers to position whichever we ended up deciding.  We will continue to work with the Wild Bunch Committee as our goals are the same.  To promote Wild Bunch, to provide each shooter with a positive and safe shooting experience, to provide a challenging yet achievable match and to HAVE FUN shootin!

MOST of the comments about the Wild Bunch Match were quite positive and for every comment that wanted more pistol, there were as many or more that liked the amount of pistol.  Comments on target size, placement, dueling trees etc also reflected similar results, some asked for targets to be closer, others for targets to be out farther.  Some wanted smaller targets, others felt there were too many small targets.  No one cleaned the match but it was close. Dr. George had one miss, there were several with three misses.  (I didn't have a report for this and I need to make one).

If anyone would like to know more or has additional questions please feel free to ask.

  7. I think we are overlooking something VERY important at Winter Range. We need to emphasize the ladies who competed. Out of the 114 competitors who completed the match there were 20 ladies. That is 18%. A higher rate than at the CAS match !!!  CONGRATULATIONS to EVERY lady who shot the match. You are all winners and great Ambassadors for the sport.  Just so they get their just due:

Ladies Modern Category winner:  Shamrock Sadie

Ladies Traditional Category winner: Texas Tiger

Actually the Cowboy match at WR had 25% women shooters.
