JTS,  Welcome to Wild Bunch.  Magazines are an issue with many 1911's. What works in one may not in another. The Baer pistols are known for being "tight." Very accurate but a bit finicky. Chip recently sold out to Bill Wilson. but I don't think the magazines have changed.  Over the past 50+ years of shooting, building, and dealing in 1911's I have been through every magazine mfgr. In the 70's we used Chip's. In the 80's we used Bill's.  some others along the way have been good and bad. Mec-gar made magazines for almost all the mfgrs. on and off over the years. Quality varied.  Act-mag makes pretty good magazines. Now the most dependable magazines by far are the Cobra magazines from Tripp.  Virgil has retired but the magazines are unchanged. Not everyone will be perfect, but they are by far the most dependable on the market.  Since Bill bought out Chip they are introducing a new magazine with reinforced lips which sounds promising.  Only time will tell. For the past 10 years I strongly recommend Tripp magazines to everyone who listen.

Thanks - I normally use Wilson ETS or 47D's  but of course those aren't WB legal so picked up the Mecgar's (I've had good experiences with Mecgar magazines in my High Powers). Lesson learnt to double check the Mags each time out ! Shooting Stars are on their way currently so I'll have time to check out before the next match on the 22nd

In my experience the most frequent cause of malfunctions in the 1911 is ammo related.  Recommend dropping EVERY reloaded round into a cartridge gauge such as L.E. Wilson.  If the round doesn't fall freely and completely into the gauge, fix the problem. The most frequent problem is slightly oversize bullets and maybe a Lee FCD can fix that occasional problem. If its a chronic problem, measure the diameter of your bullets.  The next most frequent cause is a burr on the rim.  If the round doesn't completely sit flush with the gauge, turn the round over, insert the rim into the gauge.  If the rim fits, the problem is on the other end. If the rim doesn't fit, rotate it down into the gauge to remove a burr, then drop it nose first into the gauge.  That will usually fix a slightly damaged rim.

 

The second most frequent cause is either magazine related or pistol related, assuming that you've dropped the correct amount of powder.  Dirty magazines, deformed feed lips.  Dirty pistol, incorrect spring strength (either too strong or too weak).

Agreed - I had issues with the new magazines I bought for Wild Bunch (Mecgar) with my Les Baer. I'm now ordering some Chip Shooting Star mags to replace then. They work fine in my Colt Commander but not the Baer.

Thanks to all at Cowtown who helped me through the match reminding me to Lever the rifle and Pump the shotgun (first time shooting either of these loading methods apart from the testing of the guns when I got them).

Hi everyone

I've been reading the forum for a while and thought I should say Hi as I've just registered here. I plan to start shooting WB shortly. I came and watched the matches at Winter Range which confirmed I wanted to get involved in this side of the Cowboy Action Shooting.

I've got myself setup with a 97 in 12 Gauge with a 20" barrel, a 73 in .45 colt with a 24 " barrel and a Les Baer that i already had.

I think my local club holding WB matches is out at Cowtown in Phoenix
