Mixing Cowboy and Wild Bunch

A club in my are is hoping to start Wild Bunch matches on a different weekend than their cowboy match. I salute their willingness to take this on.

As a first step they plan to let shooters choose to shoot their monthly CAS match using Wild Bunch firearms, loading five rounds into the 1911 magazines.

As much as I enjoy Wild Bunch I have avoided “five round” matches. I’m sure It would “train” me into a SDQ. I don’t usually have any trouble shooting my revolvers with five, or my 1911 with seven because the guns are dissimilar.

What say the group?

One alternative might be to set up one or two extra (Wild Bunch only) pistol targets on the stage, maybe a different shape or color than the rest, and have the Wild Bunch shooters engage them with two of the seven rounds. Yes, it throws the scores off, but so does a pump shotgun with the magazine loaded.

I bought a Springfield milspec 1911 pistol took it out shooting and the grips kept loosening up, it appears that the grip-screw bushing threads are stripped and the existing bushings already appear to be oversized. Got it from the shooters widow so I would not want to send it back for the money (was a great deal to start with) anyone know of a fix? Tried lock tight but loosen up after shooting.

No men’s only categories

I don’t think I have ever heard CAS awards announced as (for example) “Men’s Duelist”. Of course not, because there are no men’s only categories.

The WBAS handbook has always, to my knowledge, included the same language: There are no men’s only categories.

Despite that I often see category signup sheets, scoresheets and awards for “Men’s Modern” and the like. I just saw a photo of buckles to be awarded at the SE Regionals, same thing.

If an accomplished lady shooter chose to compete in a base category and won, would she want an award with that label.

It’s just inconsistent with the SHB that we say we follow.

i “get” that WB references the classic movie and 97 and 1912 shotguns were used in the film.

however is there a reason the old remington is excluded, or is it’s model number not indicative of the year 1910?

I'm looking at getting back into competing in WB soon and my current stash of WB legal 45 acp is dwindling. I've always used factory ammo and probably always will 'cause as I don't want to get into reloading for something I don't shoot often so I'm fine with purchasing some factory ammo. I have always shot 230 grain Ultramax lead and Herters 230 grain Nylon Jacket. Neither of these are available any longer. An internet search turned up Federal and American Eagle Syntech ammo. Looks like a fancier version of the previously mentioned nylon jacket lead bullets. Anyone have any experience with either of these latter mentioned? I presume still WB legal?

SWC vs standard ball

Years ago I got a case of 200 grain lead SWC 45 acp ammo. The stuff ran perfect through the Kimber I had. Since then, I've only run standard 230 grain ball through through the 1911's I've had. Never tried anymore SWC in any of my other pistols. Curious as to your experiences with SWC 45 acp in your guns. Perhaps it is individual firearm sensitive for reliability and I just got lucky with the gun I had or do quite a few of you use 200 Grain SWC with solid reliability?

Legal for WB Modern?

Are either or both of these 1911’s legal for WB?

black is a Taurus PT1911

stainless is a Ruger SR1911 #6700

and I have two MDL 12’s one has an adjustable choke and the other a bright red fibre optic front sight. Would I have to remove/replace them with a brass bead to use?

Shooting Black Power in the 2026 Black Gold Wild Bunch side match.

No cleaning or other maintenance for all 4 stages.

1 1/8 of shot over 65 grains of ffg.

44 WCF loaded with a heavily compressed load of fffg under a 200 grain bullet.

45 ACP filled with Triple 7 to the base of a 200 grain powder coated bullet.

1911 was still going strong after 80 rounds.

Chamber of my 87 started sticking after 20 or 21 rounds. First time that has happened.

1911 Malfunction

Here’s a new malfunction that I experienced today while practicing with my wild bunch 1911. Shooting the same gun(Remington R1), same mags(Wilson Combat) and same ammo(230g 5g W231) that has never let me down. Seven rounds in the mags, fire six rounds flawlessly, 6th round goes bang and ejects, slide locks open and seventh round floating around in the breech. I was shooting one handed, white knuckling the grip so my thumb was nowhere near the slide stop, i certainly wasn’t limp wristing it. This happened several times but not until after about 100 rounds, the sun was hot and so was the gun in case that matters. Anyone have any theories on the cause?

Something is allowing that 7th round to pop up as the slide goes back which allows the follower to trip the slide stop. Can it be as simple as the mag lips need readjusting?

Pistok and shot not in play. Shooter shoots the sequence properly then thinks he jacks a rifle round out, he loads the 11th round from the body and puts a third round on the last target, requiring two rounds. What's the call?

Can one use a Model 12 for the new Modern category? The rules say any SASS legal shotgun. Does that mean any cowboy shotgun? Does that mean any Wild Bunch shotgun also?

Rifle Power Factor

I would suspect that most competitors using a .38 rifle, Cowboy or Wild Bunch, are using a velocity of 750-800, at least. This is based on a revolver power factor of 60, and the using the same rounds, the rifle adds 100-150fps, easily. So the POWERR FACTOR may be in the 75-80 range already.

Using a >.40 rifle, with a PF of 150 is a disadvantage, many would agree, as it is easily twice the power factor of the .38's.

I might propose changing the Power Factor for the rifle in Wild Bunch to 80, or any value <100, for any caliber rifle, in any class. This would lessen the advantage of using a .38, and it may allow someone shooting in a "Classic" category to compete with those in an "Open" category.

The 1911 Power Factor would still be 150.

Without any hesitation stage 8. Everyone had the opportunity to shoot blazing fast and still be CLEAN. No need for spotters either the target is down or not.

Stage 5 could have been more interesting if the shotgun used all three positions.

*Comment* As a PM, fun stages for shooters become stressful stages for TO, spotters and PM. "Fun" for me, happens when the stage has elements to consider.

Rules Question - 1911 rear sights

Anyone familiar with the Nighthawk IOS slide cut? Would it be legal for WB assuming the rear sight mounted on the plate is legal for that category?
